Safeguarding the genetic heritage
of Mediterranean forests
to ensure their adaptation capacity
and long-term resilience.
MEDFORGEN is a regional initiative, working with 10 countries across the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean, to conserve and strengthen the genetic diversity of Mediterranean forests
By bringing together scientists, policymakers, forest practitioners, and public authorities, the project supports the knowledge, strategies, and cooperation needed to help forests adapt to environmental change and remain resilient for future generations.
Our objectives
MEDFORGEN supports the conservation and sustainable management of forest genetic resources across the Mediterranean by improving knowledge, strengthening capacities, and fostering regional cooperation.
The project works with countries and institutions to develop practical tools, enhance expertise, and integrate forest genetic resources into long-term conservation and restoration efforts.
What we do?
Genetic characterisation
of FGR
Identification and conservation of FGR
FGR assessment and roadmap development
Strategic forest reproductive material for restoration
Communications
What are we working towards?
MEDFORGEN is laying the foundations for long-term action through:
- A regional community of Forest Genetic Resources (FGRs) professionals
- National roadmaps for the conservation of Forest Genetic Resources
- A Mediterranean network of Genetic Conservation Units (GCUs)
- Stronger cooperation, knowledge sharing, and capacity across the region
